The Vision Australia Library has a variety of resources and services for children and young people who are blind, have low vision or have a print disability.

Our storybook kits

Reading plays a key role in the learning and development of every child, and the Feelix Library helps children who are blind or low vision to learn and develop in a unique, sensory way to support their lifelong literacy and learning.

Our storybook kits help parents, carers and teachers bring children’s stories to life, utilising a combination of books, audio, and touch. Storybook kits include:

  • A picture book with clear braille overlay
  • An audio recording of the book
  • A tactile book which tells the story through touch
  • Tactile toys or objects that relate to the story

We have over 1000 storybook kits to choose from. Storybook kits are available for all reading levels, from simple stories for babies to more complex stories for school-aged children.

Storybook kits are available in either Grade One (uncontracted) or Grade Two (contracted) Braille.

Storybook kits are also available in languages including Chinese, Vietnamese, Turkish, and Arabic.

A wide range of resources

The Feelix Library also has thousands of children’s and young people's books available in the following formats:

  • Audiobooks: Listen on the free VA Connect App
  • Print braille picture books: These picture books are overlaid with clear braille stickers and are a great way to introduce young children to braille and support their developing literacy. These books are posted Australia wide free of charge.
  • Embossed braille books: Young adult books in paper braille can be posted Australia wide free of charge.
  • eBraille books: These books can be read on electronic braille devices.

Decodable readers

The Feelix Library has a collection of decodable readers available to loan for Feelix members. These readers come in a set, accompanied by an audio player and writing and comprehension worksheets.

Decodable readers are designed for children who are learning to read. They use a systemic approach to learning phonics. As children progress through the books, they are introduced to new letter groups and their sounds, learning how to ‘decode’ printed text.

Decodable readers are particularly recommended for children with dyslexia. Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling difficulties and is recognised as a print disability.

LEGO® Braille Bricks kits

LEGO® Braille Bricks kits are available to loan for Feelix members who are learning braille. Each kit comes with a series of literacy and numeracy-based activities designed for children and all accompanying items, including LEGO® Braille Bricks, needed to complete those activities.

To request a loan of a LEGO® Braille Bricks kit for a Feelix member please email [email protected].

If you are a teacher, educator or therapist and are interested in accessing a kit because you are working with a child who is blind or has low vision, please visit the LEGO® Braille Bricks page.

Supporting senior school students

Many texts studied as part of Australian senior school English curriculums are available in audio through the Vision Australia Library. This includes texts from the NSW HSC, SACE and the complete VCE English and English as an Additional Language Lists

If you are a primary, secondary or tertiary student studying a text that is not currently available through the library, you can request that it be produced in an accessible format through Student Support Services.
