Overview

Braille literacy is a vital skill for people who are blind or have low vision. Knowing how to read by touch ensures people have better access to information, an increased sense of independence, and more professional opportunities.

Even with the rise of assistive technologies, braille is still a crucial tool for people who are blind. At home, out in the community and in the workplace, braille has the ability to empower individuals to live the life they choose.

Learn braille with Vision Australia

To support adults who want to learn to read and write braille, Vision Australia offers two professional training courses. Both courses are offered over the phone, with in-person classes also available at two locations across Australia:

  • Kensington, Melbourne, Victoria
  • Coorparoo, Brisbane, Queensland

Training is offered one-on-one or in groups in one- or two-hour sessions once a week or fortnight, depending on each individual's needs and preferences.

If attending the course over the phone, we recommend using a phone with speaker capabilities or one that connects to a hands-free headset, allowing you to listen to your trainer while keeping both hands free to feel and navigate your braille lesson book. Together, you and the trainer will work through each line and page at a comfortable pace, with ongoing communication to ensure that learning is progressing.

Course summary

Our courses are designed for adults who are blind or have low vision and are interested in either learning braille for the first time or refreshing their existing knowledge of braille.

If you’ve never learnt braille before, we recommend beginning with the Grade I uncontracted braille course. If you have previously studied braille, we encourage you to speak with our team to help determine which course is best for you.

Both courses may commence at any time throughout the year, so whenever you are ready to start learning, please contact our team.
