Event Description
In recognition of White Cane Day, Vision Australia is hosting a special event in Melbourne for all clients and community members this October.
Every year, White Cane Day offers the opportunity to celebrate the independence of all white cane users, as well as raise awareness of the challenges faced by people who are blind or have low vision. After all, for many people, the white cane is not just a tool – it’s a symbol of autonomy as it assists them to move through the world with confidence.
This year, our Victorian teams are joining forces to host a fun and inclusive community walk in Melbourne. This event will begin at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne’s CBD (an easy meeting point for those participants joining us from regional areas), and everyone will then board a tram to the walk’s starting point at Southbank.
From here, everyone will walk along Southbank to Flinders Street Station, where we will catch a train to Kooyong Station, arriving at our head office next to the station at about 12.30pm.
Once we’ve all arrived, there will be a free barbeque lunch for everyone to enjoy, and we’ll test everybody’s white cane knowledge with a round of trivia (with prizes for the winners)!
Whether you’re a cane user, a Seeing Eye Dog handler, a puppy carer or a supporter of our community, we’d love for you to join us!
Meeting point: Travellers Aid Australia at Southern Cross Station, Melbourne, at 10.30am (located opposite the luggage hall on the main concourse)
End point: Our head office at 454 Glenferrie Road, Kooyong
What to bring
All participants will need to bring their Myki, a bottle of water and their preferred mobility aid. Friends, family and support workers are all welcome and encouraged to attend!
Plus, if you happen to have an antique long folding cane or mobility aid in your collection, bring it along – it might even score you a bonus trivia point!
