Deafblind Awareness Week is observed from June 22 to June 28, in honour of leading humanitarian Helen Keller’s birthday on June 27.
As part of Deafblind Awareness Week 2025, our Children and Young People team are hosting a sensory story time at the State Library Victoria. Come and join us for a fun-filled morning of accessible songs and rhymes, craft and stories.
The Victorian Deafblind Awareness Week Partnership includes: Able Australia, Aurora School, CHARGE Syndrome Australia, Deafblind Victoria, Usher Kids Australia and Vision Australia. Working together to promote support for people with deafblindness.

This is an open event for children who are blind or have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing or have deafblindness, as well as the general public.
Learn about and experience accessible rhymes and sensory storytelling using touch, sound and Auslan.
Event schedule
The library opens at 10am, with the following activities beginning from 10.30am onwards:
- 10.30am – 11.00am: Touch and tune - rhymes and songs with tactile song cards aimed at children under 3.
- 11.00am – 11.30am: Tactile craft activity aimed at all children under 5.
- 11.30am – 12.00pm: Sensory storytime session with tactile books aimed at children under 5.
A range of access needs will be catered for including using clear speech, amplification, a radio mic and a platform Auslan interpreter. Large print, braille and tactile pictures will be available*. We are unable to provide individual communication support.
