As we turn our calendars to autumn, it is a good time to consider how to maintain a healthy lifestyle through the colder months.

Whether it’s committing to eating healthier, being more active, or even building a meditation or mindfulness practise into your daily routine - we all want to build habits that improve our physical and mental health.

But what about social health? The past two years have shown how isolation and loneliness can affect our overall wellbeing. It is more important than ever to consciously consider how we engage with friends, neighbours, and our communities at large.

So, while another summer is ending, don’t forget to include a commitment to your social health. To get you started, here are five social health goals that you may want to consider:

Join a group or club

Whether you love reading, gardening, knitting or games - there is a group for everyone! Don’t forget that some groups like telelink meet virtually, so in some cases, you may not even need to leave the house to meet new friends with common interests! Click here for more information. Volunteer for a cause you care about

It always feels great to volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about. Make a list of your favourite non-profit organisations and see which ones may have volunteer opportunities. Often when we do good, we feel good! Vision Australia has a wide range of volunteering options, or you can check out govolunteer.com.au.

Join the Vision Australia Library

The Vision Australia Library opens up a world of audio and braille books, newspapers, magazines and podcasts. Call 1300 65 46 56 or email [email protected].

Call a friend or loved one once a week

Add a note to your calendar every Sunday (or whatever day you like) to call an old friend or loved one. Once a week, think about who in your life you’d like to catch up with and give them a call out of the blue to say hello! They’ll be surprised, and you’ll both have an opportunity to reconnect.

Consider a smart device like an Amazon Echo

Digital companionship is also an option! An Amazon Echo is a voice companion that can help older adults live happy, healthy, and more socially inclusive lives.

For a limited time, devices are free for applicants who are eligible for Commonwealth Home Support Programme funding and Vision Australia can even support you to set your device up. Click here for more information and to apply!

Vision Australia provides a wide range of specialist services to support older Australians to remain active and independent. Call us today on 1300 84 74 66 to find out more.
