Albury cyclists who are blind or have low vision can now enjoy this relaxing pastime, thanks to a generous donation from a fundraising auxiliary group, almost six hours away.

Sally McGregor, who has a vision condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, was disappointed when she couldn’t participate in the Rail Trail cycling event last year, because of a shortage of tandem bikes. When she returned to her home town, Willaura, she told her friends and family what had happened.

“When Sally visited and shared with us what it would be like for her to be able to experience the freedom of riding a bike, we wanted to help,” said Karen Robinson, President of Vision Australia’s Willaura Auxiliary.

“Our group has been raising funds to support Vision Australia for the last 80 years. We raise around five to six thousand dollars each year through our Op shop and stalls. With a small town population, it is nice to know exactly where the money has been spent,” said Karen.

Vision Australia’s Albury centre now has three tandem bicycles available for locals, who are blind or have low vision, to use at Vision Australia organised events.

“I have put my name down for this year’s Rail Trail ride already,” says Sally whose sighted husband has volunteered as her sighted pilot rider.

“I love riding a bike, but it is not safe for me to do it on my own, not now that my vision has deteriorated. I am really busting to do the ride.”

The two tandem bikes, purchased from Full Cycle, who have also donated four cycling helmets, were presented to Vision Australia by Karen Robinson from the Willaura Auxiliary on Wednesday 5 August at 12pm.

According to Helen Vey, Regional Manager Riverina & North East Victoria, Vision Australia relies on the generous support of the local community to make a difference for people living with low vision and blindness. “We sincerely thank the Willaura community for their generous donation and look forward to seeing these bikes out and about in as much as possible,” she said.
