The “Visually-impaired musicians’ lives” (VIML) project is an investigation into the musical practices, participation and learning experiences of blind and partially-sighted people.

VIML is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) at the Institute of Education, University of London, and has two official partners, the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Through an online questionnaire and confidential interviews, VIML is investigating the experiences of all types of visually-impaired (blind and partially-sighted) musician, including instrumentalists, singers, composers and music teachers.

We are interested in both amateurs and professionals, even adults who have just begun to learn an instrument. This is developing into a very exciting venture and we have been in touch with visually-impaired musicians across the world about their lives, including, to name just a few places, in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, Burundi, Kenya, Denmark, Russia and Egypt.

In addition to publications, we will be having a conference in early 2015, where findings will be shared; further details will go on our website in due course. Additionally, we are already planning to share our findings on music teaching and visual impairment through musical outreach activities that will bring together students at the Royal Academy of Music and visually-impaired children at a London primary school. We firmly believe this is a very important project, but we do need you help.

If you are a visually-impaired instrumentalist, singer, composer or music teacher, (and 18 years or over), whether a beginner or a professional, please complete our questionnaire.

If you experience accessibility problems, it may be that we can complete it with you by Skype. If so, please send a message to David Baker at [email protected] to make the arrangements. If you reside outside the UK, please mention your country somewhere on the survey.

Thank you in advance for any support you are able to give with this very important work, which we hope will make a difference to the lives of visually-impaired musicians of all kinds in the future. Please tell any musical visually-impaired friends or colleagues you have about the VIML questionnaire. The more responses we have the better.
