Leading blindness and low vision service provider Vision Australia is set to bring its services directly to people across regional Victoria.
The not-for-profit organisation will hold a series of outreach events in regional centres, giving people in Yarrawonga, Wangaratta, Euroa, Wodonga and Shepparton the opportunity to access free vision checks and learn about the latest technology available to support people who are blind or have low vision.
Vision Australia Murrumbidgee Hume Regional Business Manager Helen Vey said the regional visits were important so that people who may be impacted by vision loss know exactly where to turn for support.
“Vision loss can be an isolating experience, but with the right support people can continue to live the life they choose. Hopefully after these visits people in regional centres will have a better understanding of the support available to them,” Ms Vey said.
Vision Australia’s Orthoptists will conduct the vision assessments and Ms Vey said they play a vital role in connecting people with further services.
“When it comes to vision loss, people will often try to continue as if nothing has changed when really we want them to start seeking support as soon as possible,” she said.
“After a vision assessment with one of our orthoptists, people will have an accurate idea of what level of vision they may have and we’ll be able to start connecting them with the right services to help them remain active, safe and independent.”
Attendees will also be able to access free hearing checks on the day through Australian Hearing thanks to an ongoing partnership between the two support organisations.
Ms Vey said Vision Australia had decided to combine a showcase of assistive technology with the vision checks due to the significant impact technology can have in the lives of people who are blind or have low vision.
“Technology is increasingly becoming what people turn to overcome the challenges associated with vision loss and again we want people to have an idea of everything that is available to support them.
“Whether it’s more traditional technologies like magnifiers and other small personal devices or the latest wearable devices that can recognise faces and detect colour, people will be able to experience them all and also get expert advice about all of them.”

- Yarrawonga – Sept. 27
- Wangaratta – Oct. 9
- Euroa – Oct. 24
- Wodonga – Nov. 12
- Shepparton – Nov. 20
