From 1 July 2014, Vision Australia will deliver the NSW Spectacles Program, which distribute free glasses and vision aids to eligible recipients.

Announced by the Minister for Family Services Gabrielle Upton on Friday, Vision Australia takes over the running of this service from VisionCare NSW.

“Vision Australia is a leading provider of blindness and low vision services and they will be introducing a range of improvements that will increase the accessibility to the program for clients across NSW, speed up application timeframes and provide greater choice for clients,” said Minister Upton.

Vision Australia CEO Ron Hooton said he is delighted to sign on as the new provider of the NSW Spectacles Program, saying his organisation was committed to seeing the program continue to offer a valuable service to residents throughout the state.

“This program has for over 20 years delivered vision aids to help enhance the lives of people in NSW,” Mr Hooton said.

“Vision Australia is proud to be able to come on board with the department of Family and Community Services to ensure that this important program continues to serve the needs of our state’s most vulnerable residents.”

Those who will benefit from these changes include the elderly, children, people experiencing homelessness, those living in rural and remote areas, people with disability and Aboriginal and multicultural communities.
