Vision Australia, in conjunction with the newly-launched Gold Coast Light Rail, are holding an orientation session for people who are blind or have low vision on Thursday, August 7.

Around 20 people who are blind or have low vision from the Gold Coast area will join the program, which is being put on by a team of Vision Australia’s Orientation and Mobility Specialists.

Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Kim Pilic, said:

“It’s an opportunity to give those who are visually-impaired familiarity, and confidence, with the tram platforms, bus interchanges, bus route number information and experiential tram travel training from the Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach South terminuses,” she said.

The purpose of these sessions is to increase confidence among people who are blind or visually-impaired when using the new rail system.

“Our role as Orientation & Mobility Specialists will be to provide hands-on training in access, orientation and transport travel,” Kim adds.

“The biggest outcome from these sessions is an increase in confidence and positivity about using public transport.”

Vision Australia orientation and mobility specialists teach people who are blind or have low vision to move around their environment safely and with confidence.
