Today, around 100 guests celebrated the opening of the new Vision Australia site in Wollongong.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM, joined Regional Manager Illawarra, Alex Collins, General Manager NSW Client Services, Michael Simpson and CEO Ron Hooton to welcome clients and community members.

In his speech the Lord Mayor talked about Council’s ongoing partnership with Vision Australia and the priority to make Wollongong an inclusive society.

“The relationship began with our ‘Keep it Clear’ campaign, which was aimed at ensuring that our footpaths are safe from obstacles so that residents who are blind or have low vision can travel safely and independently in the community,” he said.

Community partners, including Australian Hearing and The Body Shop added to the festivities, by providing free hearing screenings and make-up tutorials to visitors.

Closer to the city, a great new open plan design, and a small outdoor  balcony area have combined to make a fantastic new centre for services to the people of Wollongong.

“Being this close to the city means we really are part of the community. Our staff regularly promote our services to the surrounding businesses and we are very easy to reach by public transport,” said Alex Collins.
