A government program supplying free glasses to those in need will soon be available to people living on New South Wales’s mid-north coast.

Facilitated by Vision Australia and funded by the NSW State Government, the NSW Spectacles Program provides glasses and vision aids free of charge to people who are unable to afford them and will visit the mid-north coast for the first time over late February and early March.

Vision Australia NSW Spectacles Program coordinator Jennelle Schroder said a wide range of people may be eligible for free glasses under the program and Vision Australia is happy to see it reaching more areas of the state.

“The NSW Spectacles Program provides government funded glasses and vision aids to eligible recipients including seniors, children, people experiencing homelessness, those living in rural and remote areas, people with disability and Aboriginal and multicultural communities” Ms Schroder said.

“At Vision Australia we’re very happy to be able to work with our participating optometrists and the NSW Government to expand the reach of the NSW Spectacles program and provide support and assistance to the people who may need it,” she said.

Staff from Dresden Optics will visit the region to provide the service. They will visit four locations:

  • Port Macquarie -  February 27 - 28
  • Kempsey - March 1 – 2
  • Macksville - March 3
  • Nambucca Heads - March 4

Under Vision Australia's administration, significant improvements have been made to the NSW Spectacles Program with a new online application and assessment process. The process streamlines applications and product delivery for optometrists, and reduces waiting times for the delivery of glasses.
