This week’s Talking Vision is one for the theatre lovers, with renowned actress and playwright Kate Mulvany joining the program.

Kate joined the program to discuss adapting Ruth Park’s beloved novels “Harp in the South,” “Poor Man’s Orange” and “Missus” for the stage.

The novels explore life for the working class in Sydney and NSW in the early and mid-20th century and Kate said she jumped at the chance to bring some of her favourite Australian literature to the stage.

“When I was writer in resident at Sydney Theatre Company I was given the task to adapt an Australian epic and to go as big as I wanted and that’s a rare gift for any playwright,” Kate said.

“I decided that I wanted to tell a story that was very much based on women and the power of women in a community and the Harp in the South trilogy just seemed a logical choice,” she said.

In an exciting development for Ruth Park fans from the blind and low vision community, both part one and part two of a production of Harp in the South will be audio described by VA.

Also on Talking Vision this week is VA’s Building Stronger Futures Lead Belinda Wilson who talks about some upcoming employment programs for young people in Victoria and Queensland. Frances Keyland also joins with the latest Reader Recommended for all the book lovers out there.
