Vision Australia Ballarat is giving its community the opportunity to experience what it would be like to have little or no vision, and use a white cane to get around.

As part of International White Cane Day on October 15, Vision Australia is offering the chance to experience the blindfold challenge.

Many people associate dog guides with blindness, but few realise it is the white cane that is the most widely used mobility aide among people who are blind or have low vision.

Come down to Stockland Shopping Centre, Wendouree from 10am to 2pm where you can also find out more about Vision Australia and the supports that are available to people who are blind or have low vision.

Participants will be blindfolded and accompanied by a Vision Australia staff member or volunteer. The challenge is to walk a set route with the person who travels the fastest, and safest, deemed the winner.

The white cane is vital in giving a person who is blind or has low vision independence and mobility in their everyday life.

Come down to learn more and show your support for the 330,000 Australians who are blind or have low vision.
