Mrs Libby Dickeson of Lake Macquarie describes herself as a ‘typical retiree’ but those she has assisted at Vision Australia, Newcastle, for the past 20 years know Libby is far from typical.

“Libby is active in so many of our programs. At present Vision Australia is looking at starting an audio-bookclub and Libby is involved in planning for this. She is always easy to talk to and keen to help,” said Vision Australia, Coordinator of Volunteers, Ben Moxey.

A love of community radio and a curiosity about people lead Libby to volunteer to assist people who are blind or have low vision at Vision Newcastle.

“I have always been interested in talking and reading and started working in the talking newspaper service at Vision Australia. I also read textbook chapters onto cassette to assist a university student who was vision impaired.”

“The newspaper service has now gone digital but I am excited to be involved with the audio bookclub,” said Mrs Dickeson.

The work of Libby and other Vision Australia volunteers will be celebrated at a special Morning of Celebration event held at Vision Australia’s Hamilton Centre on Monday 13 May.

The celebration marks National Volunteer Week, and this year the theme is ‘Thanks a Million’.

“Vision Australia wants to say ‘thanks a million’ to all our volunteers who, like Libby, help us to make such a difference in the lives of people who are blind or have low vision,” says Ben.

Vision Australia relies on the support of more than 4,200 volunteers who help us make a difference in the lives of thousands of Australians living with blindness or low vision.
