Vildana Praljak is an aerialist with the women’s circus in Victoria climbing up on silks, or fabric, that hang some five to 10 metres from the ceiling to perform a series of acrobatics that she likens to ‘dance in the air’.

“It is physical theatre,” says Vildana “and a way for me to express myself through.” Vildana was encouraged to try circus skills by a sighted colleague who could see no reason why vision impairment should be a barrier.

Vildana was initially sceptical but decided to give it a try and discovered it was only her physical strength that she had to develop. She also knew that she had to state her very specific needs and having the right teacher was essential for her learning.

“My teacher is very verbal, which is important for me. She is a very good audio describer,” says Vildana. “Being and aerialist gives me a sense of freedom, achievement and is very empowering. It is one of the best avenues in my life.”
