According to the World Health Organisation, more than 246 million people worldwide have low vision.

Here in Australia, that figure is estimated to be around 330,000, a number that is set to increase dramatically as the population ages.

This month, Melbourne will welcome the world’s leading low vision practitioners and researchers to Vision2014, the 11th international conference on Low Vision.

Featuring a first class scientific program the conference will explore all aspects of the theme: Advancing Research, Upgrading Practice and Improving Participation.

With more than 200 speakers, topics will include the latest information about the bionic eye, an innovative use of video technology to provide services to children living in regional as well as a computer game designed to improve sight for children with visual field loss.

One of the major attractions of the exhibition at Vision2014 will be the innovative iHouse. Split into four living zones, the iHouse will demonstrate the use of mainstream technology to create an accessible living space, for example, a talking iPhone app that can tell you the colour of your clothes.
