As part of the Program of Engagement, Vision Australia is establishing a Client Reference Group and is looking for a number of suitable volunteers with lived experience of blindness or low vision to provide input and advice on our core objectives and service areas.  

Members of this Group will each liaise with Vision Australia’s Directors and management, and at the request of the Board, provide advice on service delivery and matters affecting the blind and low vision community. 

We are seeking people who are able to communicate the concerns and interests of our clients and the broader blindness and low vision community.  The person should be able to demonstrate their expertise based on their lived experience and knowledge of the sector.  

Client Reference Group volunteers are being sought to represent one of the following client groups or areas of interest:
  1. Accessible Information Solutions
  2. Seeing Eye Dogs Australia
  3. Employment
  4. Education
  5. Rural Communities
  6. Parents of children who are blind or have low vision
  7. Indigenous 
  8. Younger Adults (18 – 35 yrs)
  9. People of Working Age
  10. Older Adults (over 65 yrs)

Role:

The Client Reference Group members will interact with Vision Australia’s Directors, senior management, staff, and the blind and low vision community.  Tasks may include:
  • The provision of advice on matters relating to the client group or topic area of interest. You may identify specific issues of interest or impact upon which Vision Australia may seek further community opinion, and raise new ideas arising from your contacts and expertise.  Advice may be provided either on your own initiative, or at the request of Vision Australia;
  • Analysis and consideration of any reports and papers in relation to the client group or topic area of interest, provided by Vision Australia;
  • Inform Vision Australia of the concerns and interests of people who are blind or have low vision in relation to the client group or topic area of interest based on your lived experience, expertise in the field, and knowledge of the blind and low vision community;
  • Within the framework of Vision Australia’s Program of Engagement, participate in any consultation processes which are established relating to the client group or topic area of interest to seek views on Vision Australia’s policy and program initiatives; and 
  • Attend and participate in meetings of the Client Reference Group.  Two of these meetings a year will be face to face, and there may be other meetings held via telephone. 

Time commitment

This is a two-year volunteer position from October 2015 to September 2017. The estimated time commitment is approximately 5 hours per month, with attendance at two face to face meetings per year.
