While DisabilityCare Australia won't be launching in the ACT until July 2014, preparations are underway with $7.7 million of funding available for people with disability.

Known as Enhanced Service Offer (ESO) grants, the funding will give people an opportunity to experience control and choice using a small allocation of funds.

While the funds available through the ESO will not be sufficient to address all unmet need in the ACT, it will give many people some additional resources before they transition to DisabilityCare.

There are three categories of grants available:
  • Aids, Equipment and Minor Modifications: up to $10,000
  • Quality of Life: up to $5,000
  • To purchase flexible support and service: up to $12,000

People who left school between 2008 and 2012, with high and complex needs, may also be eligible to receive additional grants up to $12,000 to purchase supports or services.

The ESO grants will be delivered in two rounds:
  • 1 July 2013 until 9 August 2013; and
  • 30 September until 8 November 2013.
The application process will involve an assessment panel and a prioritisation of need.

Vision Australia is encouraging ACT clients who meet the eligibility criteria to think about their whole of life goals and the supports and services they need to achieve those before they apply.

Every Thursday from 4th July to 8th August, Vision Australia's Canberra office will be holding sessions to assist clients complete their Enhanced Service Offer applications. Clients can attend the Canberra office between 8am and 4pm on these days or for more information call the local office on 02 6132 5800.
