Lawrence and Nathalie began their auspicious volunteer careers with Vision Australia at Gosford in 2007. With direction from Lawrence and Nathalie, what started out as a trial activity session walking with clients at Woy Woy soon developed into a thriving recreation program. Over the years, program activities have extended to tai chi, walking groups, craft groups, gentle exercise, archery, a massage course, and numerous excursions to museums, theatres and gardens, just to name a few.

“We realise that the social part of the activity is just as important as the activity itself and, in many instances, we have become like family. You can see the improvements in clients over the months and that’s what drives us. We couldn’t do what we do without the other volunteers who are committed to the same cause as us”.

Nathalie and Lawrence have a long history of volunteering their time to support people who are blind or have low vision, as well as people with other special needs. Before moving to the Central Coast, Lawrence and Nathalie volunteered in Castle Hill at St Gabriel’s school for students with hearing impairments and other special needs; in North Rocks at the Royal Institute for Blind Children; and at Castle Hill’s Anglicare Retirement Village.

Having worn glasses all her life and having suffered from cataracts until a successful operation in 2000, Nathalie has an affinity with people living with low vision. As well as volunteering her time with the recreation program, Nathalie promotes the services of Vision Australia on a her radio show every second Thursday on Coast FM.

Lawrence and Nathalie are available at the Gosford Centre every Thursday to answer enquiries and take bookings for the recreation program. They encourage all clients in the area to come and try an activity.
