Event description

How do I bring an unforgettable character to life?

Can I give a murky backstory to a likable antagonist?

Do lead characters need to have a complex relationship?

Does every story require an indelible hero?

The foundation of a great story lies in the characters it is built upon. Their history, secrets, flaws and their intertwined worlds. Fascinating characters are the heart and soul of a story: their personalities, emotions and decisions are what shapes a plot. Creating great characters is the first step towards great writing.

Vision Australia Library, in conjunction with the Queensland Writers Centre, is hosting a five-week program specifically designed for writers at the commencement of their writing journey. This is your opportunity to learn how to create complex characters, who will sustain your readers’ interest for the duration of your story.

We are proud to introduce Melissa Ashley, our talented facilitator for our character development course. Melissa is an award-winning and best-selling author of three historical novels, as well as a collection of poetry. She has published articles and reviews in a variety of media and appeared in a range of literary festivals and conferences. She works to develop other writers’ skills and confidence through teaching creative writing and poetry, mentoring, manuscript appraisal and editing.
