On Monday, 7 April 2025, the Coorparoo Children’s Therapy Room came alive with laughter, chocolate and a whole lot of learning as our skilled therapists hosted another jam-packed Cool Kids group session. With a brilliant blend of fun and foundational skill-building, this school holiday program gave kids who are blind or have low vision the chance to connect, create and grow across key areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum.
Here’s what our Cool Kids got up to:
Welcome and introductions
With a focus on self-determination and social interaction, the group practiced listening and taking turns as they shared names and fun facts. A great start to break the ice!
Rapport-building game
A lively movement game got everyone giggling and moving! This activity supported gross motor skills, listening and turn-taking while building comfort and connection through shared fun.
Crafting Easter headbands
Scissors, glue and imagination were in full swing! Kids honed fine motor skills and tapped into their creativity during this recreation and leisure session that resulted in some very cute bunny-themed accessories.
Cooking chocolate nests
This deliciously tactile session mixed independent living skills with sweet treats. Kids practiced measuring, mixing and pincer grasps as they created edible Easter nests.
Body scan relaxation
After all the excitement, a gentle body scan helped kids tune into their bodies and emotions. This quiet moment supported self-regulation and taught practical strategies for managing energy levels.
Scavenger hunt adventure
With teamwork, orientation skills and problem-solving at the forefront, kids navigated their surroundings to uncover hidden treasures. This fun activity supported Orientation and Mobility, Compensatory Access and Social Interaction in one dynamic game. Kovu the Seeing Eye Dog also enjoyed dog-sitting the eggs until the Cool Kids came to find them.
Easter song with signing
Everyone joined in on a musical moment, learning to sign along with the lyrics. This inclusive activity boosted motor planning, execution and confidence in alternative communication.
Obstacle course
The final burst of energy! Children tackled a custom-designed course, building mobility, spatial awareness and even more teamwork - with plenty of cheering and encouragement!
Reflections and goodbyes
We wrapped up the day by sharing our favourite moments, building self-awareness, celebrating progress and saying goodbye until next time.
Why it matters
Each activity was carefully designed to align with our Life Ready approach which includes the Expanded Core Curriculum, essential areas that support children who are blind or have low vision to thrive in all parts of life. From cooking and craft to mobility and mindfulness, our Cool Kids aren’t just having fun - they’re building the confidence and skills they need for everyday success.
