In 2024, updates to Australia’s aged care system aim to improve transparency and provide more flexibility in how care is delivered.
For most clients, day-to-day services will remain the same. These changes will primarily affect people transitioning from Home Care Packages to Support at Home, where the process for accessing services may be different.
A shift towards more choice and control
The aged care system is moving towards a more person-centered approach, designed to give people greater say in the services they receive. This means more flexibility in how support is provided, with an emphasis on individual needs rather than being driven by service providers.
If you are familiar with the way the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) runs, some of these changes may feel similar. They aim to offer more clarity and control over your funding and services.
Greater transparency in costs
One key update is the introduction of clearer pricing, with set caps on service fees to improve transparency. This is intended to reduce unexpected costs and ensure more of your funding goes directly to the services that support you at home.
Previously, some providers allocated a significant portion of funding to administration fees. Under the new system, limits on these costs mean a higher percentage of funding should go towards direct care and services.
Stronger quality and complaint standards
The changes also include stricter quality standards for service providers, reinforcing accountability and service reliability. Providers who do not meet these standards may face consequences, ensuring care is delivered with consistency and respect.
Additionally, updates to the complaint process are designed to make it easier for people to raise concerns and seek resolutions when issues arise.
