How Vision Australia puts control and support in your hands from the start

At Vision Australia, we believe every client should feel empowered, informed, and in control of their care from their very first contact with us.

For older Australians beginning their journey with vision loss, navigating support options can be overwhelming. There is so much information to learn it can hard to know where to even begin.

Our Know Your Vision (KYV) clinic is designed to ease this transition, offering a warm introduction to Vision Australia’s wraparound services while keeping your needs, goals, and preferences at the heart of every conversation.

Starting with your goals, not our services

In the KYV  appointment, we meet with you to understand who you are and what you love to do. Rather than just listing off our services with technical jargon, our  experienced Service Providers will find out what is most important to you. What daily activities bring joy? What hobbies or routines have you had to step away from? These are the conversations that form the foundation of a personalised plan, making every service recommendation relevant to your life.

Empowering you with practical tools and knowledge

For many, adjusting to vision loss can bring practical challenges, like learning to use assistive technology or understanding funding options. To help, we offer a guided tour through equipment that supports day-to-day living, from simple and affordable items to more specialised aids.

In this first session you will get a hands-on experience with various tools and practical strategies you can start using right away. We also help navigate funding options, giving clarity on how to access and make the most of financial assistance, helping to build your confidence.

Personalised low vision support

During the second part of the session, you will meet with an orthoptist in our low vision clinic to explore ways to maximise your remaining vision. The focus will be for us to offer you new ways to achieve the goals you have outlined to us previously. Whether that is learning a new way to read or do daily activities.

It’s by linking each support option back to your personal goals, that you will receive solutions that directly align with your day-to-day, not just generic advice.

During the second intake session, you’ll meet with an orthoptist in our low vision clinic to explore ways to make the most of your remaining vision. This session focuses on helping you achieve the goals you’ve previously shared with us, whether that’s anything from learning new techniques for reading or managing daily tasks.

By connecting each support option to your personal goals, we make sure you receive solutions tailored to your day-to-day needs, not just general advice.

Funding details

The cost of KYV can be covered by Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) or Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) funding.

A lasting connection

Our two-hour Know Your Vision session serves as a starting point for continued support tailored to you.  Every client walks away with a clear understanding of how we can help, equipped with resources and knowledge that make life feel more manageable.

At Vision Australia, we’re not just a service provider. We’re here to listen, adapt, and ensure every service makes a meaningful difference. From the start, it’s you that has a say in your care, reinforcing that you the one in control.
