The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is committed to helping people get their tax returns right this tax time.

Ways to lodge your tax return

If you are lodging your own tax return, the best way is online with myTax. It is the quick, safe and secure way to lodge. myTax is compatible with screen-reader software and can be used on any device, such as a tablet, smartphone or computer. To use myTax you need a myGov account linked to the ATO.

You can also use a registered tax agent to prepare and lodge your tax return. Tax agents must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). You can find a registered tax agent or check whether a person is registered by visiting the TPB website.

Tax Help

The ATO’s community-based Tax Help program is a free and confidential service that helps people complete and lodge their tax returns.

If you earn around $60,000 or less and have simple tax affairs, an ATO accredited volunteer may be able to help you at one of many Tax Help centres around Australia, as well as online or over the phone. Tax Help is available by appointment from late July to 31 October each year.

To learn more about the Tax Help program, visit ato.gov.au/TaxHelp or call 13 28 61 for a Tax Help centre near you.

Tax Clinics

If you’re not eligible for Tax Help, you may be eligible for help from the National Tax Clinic program.

The National Tax Clinic program is a government-funded initiative that supports eligible individuals and small businesses who are unable to access tax advice and assistance due to economic, social or personal factors. While program funding is administered by the ATO, participating tax clinics operate independently from the ATO.
