Webinars

Telelink winter webinar: Tyson Yunkaporta, July 19

Tyson Yunkaporta is an academic, an arts critic, and a researcher who belongs to the Apalech Clan in far north Queensland. He carves traditional tools and weapons and also works as a senior lecturer in Indigenous Knowledges at Deakin University in Melbourne. He is the author of ‘Sand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World’, a remarkable book about everything from echidnas to evolution, cosmology to cooking, sex and science and spirits to Schrödinger’s cat.

Tyson looks at global systems from an Indigenous perspective. He asks how contemporary life diverges from the pattern of creation. How does this affect us? How can we do things differently?

Telelink winter webinar: Wanda Díaz-Merced, July 26

Wanda Díaz-Merced is an astronomer best known for using the process of sonification to enable the study of space through sound.

Losing her sight in her early twenties, Wanda developed new ways to study stellar radiation that were accessible to people who are blind or have low vision. Discovering she could use sound to detect patterns in radio data that could potentially be obscured or missed in visual and graphical representations, Wanda has become a leader in increasing equality of access to astronomy and has been included in the BBC’s list of the seven most trailblazing women in science.
