Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.
It’s a special episode of Talking Vision this week, as we celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on December 3.
This year’s theme for IDPwD explores the role of innovation in creating an accessible and equitable world.
One of these innovators is CEO of World Blind Golf, Neil Herdegen, who catches up with Seeing Eye Dogs puppy trainer and avid golfer Mark Jackman to chat about his ideas for bringing blind golf to the community.
Neil is a golfer with low vision himself, and with fellow blind golfer and World Blind Golf president Dr Brad Carver he created a new blind golf organisation that did away with what Neil refers to as unnecessary barriers to participation, such as medical tests or vision categories.
His philosophy from the beginning has always been that golf is for everyone, and he encourages all participants to enjoy golf together on an equitable playing field.
“We decided that blind golf needs a shake up and a new outlook, basically we want to make blind golf awesome for players, golf courses, professionals and everyone who helps us out and makes blind golf what it is today,” Neil said.
