Do you live in Darwin? Are you a home-grown history buff, arts aficionado or science nerd with a yearning to share your passion? Then Vision Australia Radio wants to hear from you.
The community radio station network is seeking volunteer broadcasters for its recently established presence in the Top End.
Volunteers will have a knowledge of local matters, broadcasting knowledge and presentation skills to produce a range of entertaining and informative specialist programs for the blind and low vision community in Darwin.
The station doesn’t have a physical space or studio so volunteers need to be able to record content remotely. However training, technical support and mentoring will be provided by as needed.
Network station manager, Conrad Browne, said Vision Australia Radio is thrilled to be able to deliver specialist programming and is excited about making radio that captures the uniqueness and diversity of a city like Darwin.
"We’re very much at the start of establishing broader content so we have a fantastic opportunity to get things right from the start. We want specialist programs that truly reflects what’s important to Darwin’s blind and low vision community and what is taking place in their town. And who better to do this than locals?"
Vision Australia Radio is part of the Australian community radio network which has an ethos of inclusion and diversity in all of its programming. As such, Conrad says its vital that the new Darwin programming echoes this ethos.
"It goes without saying we’d love to hear from people who are blind or have low vision, or have any other disability. Whether they create a program focussed on disability or any program of their choosing. We also encourage, and would be excited, to hear from first nation’s broadcasters and producers," Conrad said.
With its presence now in Darwin, Vision Australia Radio Network has 11 stations across three states: Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. It offers a range of programs including readings from newspapers, magazines and books, interview and specialist programs on new technology, gardening, finance, travel, wine and food, the arts and more.
The specialist Darwin programming will build on from the Darwin and broader Northern Territory news reading content. Newspapers and magazines such as the NT News and online content from the ABC, Guardian and SBS are featured in the
‘Top End News’ program which will launch in late October and can be heard locally on Vision Australia Radio Darwin on DAB+ and everywhere via the Vision Australia Radio Darwin webstream here.
