Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.

On this week’s episode, Sam is joined by Parramatta resident Liz Wheeler, whose trouble navigating the re-modelled Parramatta CBD motivated her to advocate for safer and more accessible footpaths and roads.

While Liz has faced a fair deal of bureaucratic resistance, she is nonetheless committed to the cause that environments can and should be improved.

“If I allow them to make me feel like I’m not capable of navigating my way around independently, then the world for people like me really gets that much smaller,” Liz said.

On the other side of things, Liz has been encouraged by the number of people who are blind or have low vision who have spoken up and joined forces with her to improve their mobility and independence.

“I think it’s been really good that we are no longer individual voices and we can deal with this together systematically. I’ve certainly heard from a few others saying ‘yeah that’s me too’ or ‘I now have to take a longer route to work because I don’t feel safe’,” she said.
