Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.
On this week’s episode Sam speaks to Nicole Lee, board member of People with Disabilities Australia (PWDA), which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Over the past four decades, PWDA has based their work around the concept of “nothing about us without us”, advocating to ensure voices from the disability community are front and centre in all major decisions that affect them.
“We don’t just sit under one banner, we’re not just boxed in as “disabled people”, we are complex people who have the right to be included and consulted in all decisions,” Nicole said.
Nicole said PWDA have a number of key areas they’re currently advocating for, including better involvement of people with disability in the operations of the NDIS.
“To see disabled people and our rights upheld and put at the centre of decision making under the NDIS, that’s a future we all want no matter who you are,” she said.
