Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.
On this week’s episode, Sam catches up with Darren Britten from the Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET).
The ADCET has released a series of guidelines and eLearning resources for lecturers, tutors and administrators to improve the quality of education for tertiary students who are blind or have low vision.
The resources are designed to remove barriers which impact on tertiary students being able to pursue their education, such as inaccessible formats for course materials, or a lack of accessibility features in online course content.
“Having access to education and being on equal footing with your peers in accessing education is so important, and one of the best ways to remove those barriers [to enable that] is through accessibility,” Darren said.
“Saying your name when you introduce yourself, doing a roll call, vocalising a graphic that’s on the screen is for the benefit of everybody in the room, so there’s lots of recommendations in there that are useful for anybody who is looking to make their content as accessible as it can be,” he said.
