Phillip Murphy took a chance on himself after losing his job when his eyesight deteriorated.
“When I lost my job, I went to the pier in Baltimore and I closed my eyes and I sang,” he said.
“I made $60 in one hour and I was astounded. I could just do it for myself so well, with just what I had.
“I was enough in that moment and I vowed to never not be enough again.”
Speaking to Vision Australia Radio’s Studio 1, Phillip became an American music sensation after appearing on American idol in 2021.
Going by his stage name, Murphy, he sang his own song called The Painted Man blew away judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
“That song, it's about being who you want to be while making small alterations that say, I'll do this because I want to appeal to someone,” Murphy said.
While not progressing to the final stages, Murphy became a fan favourite and continues to release his own original music.
