Newlyweds Rhyce and Caren Ellis vividly remember touring venues for their wedding reception and being ignored.

Their sighted family members were given all the attention.

“I just found that really off-putting because it was like, you know, we're the ones inquiring,” Caren told Vision Australia Radio’s Talking Vision.

“That's not how you would treat someone who's dying to get married at your venue, even if they do have a disability.”

Both Rhyce and Caren have vision loss. They met at work at Vision Australia and bonded over Caren’s surprisingly affectionate Seeing Eye Dog Reba.

“She snubbed every other male who went to pat her, but not Rhyce,” Caren admits.

Both say if it wasn’t for Reba choosing Rhyce, they might not have ended up together.

When planning their wedding and honeymoon, the couple had to overcome a few hurdles.

They decided to honeymoon in Queensland, which meant they had to put a lot of trust in people.

“I did a lot of research and I came across this travel agency that catered for people with disabilities,” Caren said.

“They're called Leisure Options, they said that they were an NDIS provider and they basically planned our honeymoon and it went very smoothly for us.”

The resort was accessible, and their chosen activities also included tactile options.
