Sherold Kelleher has a box full of the Herald Sun and Bendigo Advertiser quizzes waiting for the next call.
The 74-year-old Bendigo local is a Telelink facilitator, hosting quiz groups and socials groups over the phone for people who are blind or have low vision.
She’s been on the phones for 17 years, and loves giving back to the community.
“I love talking to everybody, I’m a bit of a chatterbox,” she said.
Telelink has been connecting the blind and low vision community for more than 40 years.
It provides a much-needed social platform between people who can really understand the complexities of vision loss.
It’s a regular therapy session, some admit.
For Sherold, it is only an hour or two a day, but she relishes the time with the groups.
“As I’m calling up everyone to get them connected to the conference call, I love getting that one-on-one time to hear how they’re going and what the weather is like over where they are,” she said.
The Telelink program is looking for volunteer facilitators to help host the groups over the next half of 2022.
You can opt in to host one group or multiple over the week.
The types of groups operating include:
- Social groups
- Quizzes
- Gardening
- Crosswords
- Sport
- Arts and crafts
- History
- Current Affairs
- Cooking and food
- Table for One Dating
- It’s All About Braille Support
- And many more!
