Addressing the underrepresentation of real women in fashion, volunteer led organisation This Is Me is looking for women of all backgrounds including those who are blind or have low vision to feature in their catwalk event for International Women’s Day.
The event will be hosted on March 19 in Melbourne, and aims to create a space for women who are generally not given a platform nor celebrated by designers.
Speaking to Vision Australia Radio’s Talking Vision, This is Me organiser Tina Brunet said the 2022 event will once again shine a light on the achievements diverse women.
“I see a lot of women like me who have grown up feeling inadequate, being not the right size, not the right shape, not the right height colour, and just being constantly told that you're not good enough,” Tina told host Tess Herbert.
This is the second year the event is being held, after a successful 2020 event featured 30 women.
One of the participants, Peggy Soo, debuted on the catwalk alongside her dog guide Tessa.
She said it’s a wonderful opportunity to share stories and meet like-minded women who aren’t focused on in the media.
Peggy encouraged women who are blind or have low vision to consider becoming part of the event.
“It might look scary – it might take you out of your comfort zone, but it’s a beautiful event,” Peggy said.
All profits of the 2022 This is Us event will go towards developing a leadership program for vulnerable young women in India.
