Caren and Seeing Eye Dog Reba

Caren was born with glaucoma and has always had problems with her vision. However, once she began studying at RMIT she found it increasingly difficult to navigate around the campus.

“My mobility instructor at Vision Australia suggested a Seeing Eye Dog,” Caren explains. Reba, a golden retriever, was matched with Caren and will provide her with a lot more independence.

John and Seeing Eye Dog Umali

Hi, my name is John and I lost my sight overnight 7 years ago. I literally woke up one morning thinking it was still dark outside.

The specialists told me that I suffer from a number of conditions including Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Degeneration, so I’m totally blind in my left eye and have only 3% vision in my right.

I was matched with my Seeing Eye Dog, Umali. She immediately bonded with the whole family and on the first weekend she followed me around everywhere.

Vaughan and Seeing Eye Dog Deva

Sydney-based criminal lawyer Vaughan (39) has been legally blind since birth and, along with his Seeing Eye Dog Deva, is a regular presence at Parramatta Local Court.

“Having the right dog is essential for my job. Vision Australia matched me with Seeing Eye Dog Deva and she is fitting in beautifully,” says Vaughan.

Moana's story

Moana’s Story

“Moana notices that people treat her differently. She says, ‘Mum, it’s just my eyes that don’t work, everything else about me works just fine; why do people feel they need to speak to me as if I’m a baby?’” Honi, mother to Moana, aged 12.
