Event Description

This summer, come on a literary journey around the world and beyond. We invite you to a three-part travel themed discussion on the books that have taken us to places that captivate and fascinate.

Session 1: Australiana
Australia’s coasts, cities and isolated places are the memorable settings of many beloved books by Australian authors, with the landscape often holding its own as a character. In Australiana we will discuss the setting of classics such as Picnic at Hanging Rock and A Fortunate Life, how contemporary writers like Jane Harper and Tim Winton capture Australian places, and look at the First Nations writers celebrating country.

Session 2: Faraway places
In Faraway Places we’ll tickle our wanderlust as we share the books set in places we’ve visited and places still on our bucket lists. We will discuss favourite travel writers like Hemmingway and Bill Bryson, as well as what makes the perfect holiday read.

Session 3: Fantasy lands
No need to pack your passport for this one, we’re embarking on a grand adventure beyond space and time. In Fantasy Lands we will discuss the imaginary places we wish we could visit such as Middle Earth, Hogwarts and Narnia, as well as speculative fiction beyond the limits of reality.
